Revised Alcohol Policy

THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF UPPER SOUTH CAROLINA

The Rev. Canon Stephen J. Rhoades
Canon to the Ordinary

MEMORANDUM

To: All Clergy and Senior Wardens
Date: February 6, 2023
Re: Revised Diocesan Alcohol Policy

On December 10, 2022, the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina approved a Standing Resolution detailing a revised alcohol policy for the Diocese, subject to the ratification at the 101st Diocesan Convention in November 2023.
The purpose of this revision is to repeal the existing policy established in 1985 and bring the diocesan alcohol policy into alignment with Resolution A158 of the Seventy-Eighth General Convention of the Episcopal Church (2015) regarding the responsible presence of alcohol at church events.
The revised policy is attached for your review. I commend it to your study and encourage you to consider adopting the guidelines for your own congregations.
Should your congregation choose to serve alcohol at a congregational event, I encourage you to consult with your church attorney regarding any license that may be required by state or local law, and any additional insurance riders that may be required.

Faithfully,

The Rev. Canon Stephen J. Rhoades
