Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina

Events

Throughout the year, various events are offered for young people in grades 6-12. Diocesan events are held in various locations and are open to all youth and their friends.  Each of these events, while focused on a specific age group and theme or program, is designed to deepen the spiritual development and the leadership skills of the participants.

The Diocesan Youth Leadership Commission currently designs and implements four youth events, which happen throughout the school year.  Representatives from DYLC and others make up the Happening Committee, which is responsible for the organization and staffing of leadership for two Happening Weekends each year.  Priests and Deacons of the Diocese serve as Spiritual Directors and Chaplains for each weekend.

All events in the Diocese are governed by a set of policies and guidelines and a community covenant. These have been established by the DYLC and are reviewed each year and amended as needed. To register for these events, complete the forms listed to the left. Then, pay online for individuals or congregations.

Senior High School Events

The Diocese holds two events for High School students (grades 9-12) each year:

Happening

Happening ButterflyHappening is a weekend event for youth in grades 10-12 which is focused on encountering Christ within community and learning how to strengthen our relationship with Christ and each other. The weekend is structured on a program which is governed by the National Happening Committee. Each diocese with a Happening program develops its own local flavor and traditions. Each weekend is basically the same program, with variations due to the individuals who make up the team. One only “makes” one Happening weekend, but can participate as a team member on subsequent weekends.

The Happening Committee, which is a sub-committee of the DYLC, oversees these weekends. Those serving on this committee, youth and adults, must have attended a Happening weekend. The Rector and Big Brother/Big Sister and the most recent past and future youth and adult leadership are members of this committee. This committee meets before each weekend to select leadership for the next event and to evaluate the previous event. They also make policy decisions and set dates for subsequent meetings, weekends, reunions and staff training days. The current chair of the Happening Committee is This email address is being protected from spambots.
