Columbia, SC March for Our Lives

Not one more.

Students, teachers, parents, and allies around the country will gather in solidarity on March 24 in rally for gun control and more efficient school safety measures in wake of the mass shooting at a Florida high school.
The “March for Our Lives” demonstration was organized by the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shortly after the gunman and former student, armed with an AR-15 rifle, claimed the lives of 17 innocent people.
Now, more than ever, we must show our support and speak for the students and teachers whose lives were taken prematurely by way of mass shooting, a recurring tragedy that has reached epidemic proportions. Although most of us have not been personally affected by this recent misfortune, it is our responsibility to take action, as we could be next.
Paul Palmer said an event like this is “the intersection of my work as a probation parole officer, a Christian and a member of The Episcopal Peace Fellowship.” He finds it especially important that we participate in our local march and believes that taking part is a matter of saving lives. He lost his nephew to gun violence 20 years ago.
Paul Palmer recalls a specific experience as an officer that he found resonated with him most as a follower of Christ. While making an arrest, his life was threatened by a 13-year-old with a sawed off shotgun. Palmer’s partner saw the threat and diffused the situation. Paul’s gratitude in the situation is that his partner’s swift action kept both Paul and the young boy from losing their lives, something he sees as the Christian response.
Join Bishop Waldo and fellow South Carolinians and people of faith at the State House on March 24th.
