On October 20 and 21 clergy and laypeople from across Upper South Carolina came together at the 84th Convention to attend to the business of the diocese The convention, hosted by Church of the Advent, Spartanburg, took as its theme “’To do the work you have given us to do’: The Healthy Church Initiative,” focusing on the project launched at the diocesan Leadership Conference in May 2006.
In his address to convention Bishop Henderson termed the Healthy Church Initiative our “next step,” its purpose being “to assist congregations in effectively changing lives, by bringing people into relationship with God through Christ.” The initiative, made possible in Upper South Carolina by a generous gift to the diocese, allows all congregations to avail themselves of the services of a professional church consultant, Tony Watkins, who will work with them to discern their unique mission goals and devise a strategic plan for achieving them.
To date, Bishop Henderson announced, 28 of Upper SC’s 65 congregations are active in the Healthy Church Initiative. As a result of their involvement, several congregations will engage in capital fund drives, projected to raise in all some $14 million. “I expect next year,” Bishop Henderson said, “to announce that 100% of our congregations are involved.” Read more...
