Furman Canterbury to sponsor U2charist, October 5

Canterbury of Furman is set to hold an U2charist, a celebration of the Holy Eucharist with biblically rich music of the Irish rock band U2, October 5, 2006 at 6 p.m. This unique worship experience is intended to raise awareness of the Episcopal Church's committment to the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as expressed at this year's General Convention (Resolution D022).

Although many don't think of U2 as a Christian band, their lyrics are rich in biblical and theological references, traditional Judeo-Christian imagery and language. The music in the U2charist is replete with the message of global reconciliation, justice for the poor and oppressed and the importance of caring for your neighbor, particularly the most vulnerable and in need.

The Millennium Development Goals are an eight-pronged declaration that has at its core the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger by the year 2015. They are:

    1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
    2. Achieve universal primary education
    3. Promote gender equality and empower women
    4. Reduce child mortality
    5. Improve maternal health
    6. Combat HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases
    7. Ensure environmental sustainability
8.Create a global partnership for development with a focus on debt, aid and trade

The U2charist will be held in the Chapel of Furman University in Greenville. The Rev. Timothy Dombek, rector of St. James, Greenville, will celebrate. the service is open to the public and the entire diocese is cordially invited.

For more information, contact David Sibley at David Sibley or visit www.furmanu2charist.org.
