Upcoming retreats at the Snail's Pace

Journey of the Heroine/Hero
June 24-26th
Sometimes our lives seem utterly chaotic convulsions and our days no more than random collection of dots which do not appear to connect in any meaningful pattern. However, throughout the long march of human history and story, pattern has emerged. Some people call it the Great Story, others the monomyth or voyage of the heroine-hero. Whatever name we may use, there is comfort in knowing that our lives too share meaning and order with the greatest and the least.
During this weekend the participants will first learn the stages of the great journey through an introductory exercise in guided imagery on Friday evening. Throughout the day on Saturday each phase of the journey will be explored in greater depth through readings from contemporary short stories and personal journaling.
Our companions in our travels will become familiar friends like Flannery O'Connor, Frederick Buechner, Annie Dillard, Alice Walker, John Updike and others. On Sunday morning the weekend will conclude with a worship experience in which we explore the spiritual implications of our travels and the deepening of our discipleship. If you are feeling the itch of wanderlust this spring and long to go on pilgrimage, please join us!
Deadline to register is Friday, June 3rd.

The Rev. Michael Sullivan, rector of Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Ga., is the featured preacher June 5 on “Day 1,” the nationally syndicated radio program also accessible online at Day1.org. The program features a sermon by Sullivan along with interviews conducted by producer and host Peter Wallace.
Before coming to Holy Innocents’ two years ago, Sullivan was rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, Va. He earlier served as curate at Church of the Advent in Spartanburg, S.C., and Canon for Mission at Trinity Cathedral in Columbia, S.C.
His sermon for Ascension Sunday, based on Jesus’ “High Priestly Prayer” (John 17:1-11), is entitled “An Out-of-Order Lesson Calling Us to a New Day,” because the lesson looks back at events that occurred before Christ’s crucifixion. “The beauty of this out-of-order Gospel proclaiming the cross in the midst of our season of resurrection, the beauty comes raging back into our lives, right back into our calls when we hear Christ’s words once again,” Sullivan says. “On this side of the prayer, on this after-Easter day when we go back and listen once again, we hear the whole prayer and realize that what starts as Christ’s obedience to change ushers in our obedience to change.”
Sullivan is a graduate of Wofford College. Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he accepted a James B. Duke Fellowship at Duke University, but after pursuing that program for a year, entered law school at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his law degree. During his practice of appellate law in Columbia, he discerned a call to priesthood and completed studies at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., where he now serves as a member of the board of trustees.
Sullivan is the author of two books, “Windows into the Soul” and “Windows into the Light,” published by Morehouse. He also writes for numerous web sites and publications, and leads retreats on art and spirituality.
Formerly known as “The Protestant Hour,” “Day 1” has been broadcast every week for 66 years. It is currently distributed to more than 200 radio stations across America and overseas. “Day 1” is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in cooperation with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ, the United Methodist Church, and other mainline denominations.
