Episcopal Diocese of Upper South Carolina

US Congregational Life Survey

TO:        Rectors, Vicars and Wardens in the Diocese of Upper South Carolina
FROM:    Your Commission for Congregations
SUBJECT:    US Congregational Life Surveys

Many of you will recall that we briefly discussed the results and benefits of this tool for self-examination at the EDUSC Clergy Work Day earlier this month (May 7, 2015). By now, all Clergy also should have received an email with the “weighted average” strength data from these surveys, for the Diocese as a whole.  We hope that this information will provide at least one benchmark against which you can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of your congregation.

An even better way to evaluate the progress of your congregation is to repeat the US Congregational Life survey.  Taking the survey every 3 or 4 years is recommended so that you can compare your congregation’s improvement in the relevant measures of congregational strength as well as opinions on other questions.  Understanding this kind of information will be especially useful for determine “what's working” and for refining your strategic planning for the future of your congregation.

We also recommend that congregations which have undergone substantial change over the past two years – either due to a recent change in leadership (particularly a change in the Rector/Vicar), or because sources of conflict or potential conflict have been dealt with – retake the survey.

As before, the Diocese will pay the basic cost of performing the US Congregational Life Survey.  The only cost to your congregation will be $1.00 for each survey form ordered. You may order the survey forms and instructions by contacting The Rev. Canon d’Rue Hazel (This email address is being protected from spambots. If you have any questions about the US Congregational Life Survey, or need help interpreting your results, please feel free to contact Jim Wiley at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or (803) 420 2455.
