EPISCOPAL CURSILLO LEADER'S WORKSHOP

November 3-4, 2007
Christ Church Greenville
Diocese of Upper South Carolina

The Diocese of Upper South Carolina invites you to participate in an Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Workshop in Greenville, SC, November 2-4, 2007. Christ Church has made available their new life center facility, The All Saints Center, for our time together. The church is located in the heart of Greenville’s downtown and is a historic landmark.

As noted in the ECLW coordinators manual, Cursillo has come a long way. From roots imbedded in our Roman Catholic heritage, it has matured into a more fully Anglican movement with an understanding of the Church, of ministry, and of witness that is both Catholic and Protestant, old and new, tried and fresh. It is one of the Episcopal Church’s most important programs for training workers for mission. Thousands of Episcopal Cursillistas today serve as clergy; as servants in social ministries and servers at the altar; as leaders in environments far and wide—home, neighborhood, church, workplace, play-place. As Cursillo has matured, it has moved away from old preoccupations and concerns.
Today, the challenges we face are those of a vibrant, established movement in the Episcopal Church. Most important of these challenges is the question—where will leaders for tomorrow’s Cursillo come from? How do we grow ministers who will work effectively not only in the other environments we face but also in Cursillo itself?

There are many parts to the answer, but certainly one of the most important keys to growing future leaders is the ECLW. Now more than twenty years old, this program offers Cursillo communities an opportunity to reflect on what they do. We come together to celebrate our strengths, identify our challenges, and work to improve what we are already doing so well. In this effort, its purpose is fourfold:

  1. To deepen the commitment to Christ and the living of a life in Christ among the Cursillo leaders in the country.
  2. To clarify the purpose and method of the Cursillo movement as it seeks to work within the Episcopal Church to fulfill the Great Commandment—“love one another”—and the Great Commission—“Go. Make disciples of all nations.”
  3. To help grow new leaders for the Cursillo movement so that it may continue to be an effect instrument in the work of the Episcopal Church and the restoration of all things in Christ.
  4. To help diocesan Cursillo communities assess how they live out the Cursillo method and encourage them to explore how to do it more effectively.

An experienced team of leaders will present talks and then facilitate discussions on various aspects of the Cursillo method. In this way the ECLW will be a tool to provide Cursillistas with a method for celebrating victories, sharing difficulties, and planning for future progress. For all these reasons, the ECLW is intended for any Cursillista who is called to work in Cursillo as a mission field. We encourage dioceses to identify future as well as current leaders and to send them to an ECLW even if it means helping to finance their participation. Investing in the work of growing leaders is the best investment a diocesan Cursillo community can make in its own future. For surely, when we do that we invest also in growth of the Kingdom.

Registration material for the event follows as does a map of Greenville showing the location of the church as well as The Phoenix Inn where a block of hotel rooms has been reserved. The Phoenix Inn is located on Pleasantburg Drive and is only minutes from the church. Please contact the hotel directly at (864) 233-4651 to make your reservation. When calling mention Cursillo. The room rate is $65 per night for single occupancy. Two people may share the same room for an additional $10. A continental breakfast is included.

For the frugal and adventurous, you may stay in the All Saints Center at no charge. You must provide your own air mattress, linens, blankets, towels and all toiletries. The center does have showers and quiet rooms that can be made into temporary sleeping quarters. A light breakfast will be available on Saturday at no charge. On Sunday, the men of Christ Church prepare breakfast for a nominal charge. Please contact me if you have any questions. My telephone number and email address can be found on the registration form. Along with other Council members, we look forward to your participation and arrival.
